How can a counselor help me?
A school counselor can help with the following:
1. Register a student for classes for the year and for credit recovery.
2. Change or re-arrange a class schedule. Last day to drop and add a class was 1-15-14
3. Mediate a problem between teacher and student.
4. Mediate a problem between student and peers.
5. Provide resources for financial hardship.
6. Provide resources for emotional hardships such as alcoholism, drug abuse, mental health disorders, abuse, etc.
7. Provide crisis intervention for students who are experiencing: thoughts of suicide, anxiety, rage, ADD, ADHD, behavioral issues, stress, crisis, etc. Crisis intervention is NOT long-term therapy. We are not licensed therapists, but can assist you in finding someone who is.
8. Provide referrals to outside agencies who can treat and provide long-term therapy for a student and the entire family.
9. Provide college and career planning, financial aide information, scholarship information, testing information and anything related to post-secondary planning.
10. Provide educational resources to improve academically-an example would be test-taking strategies. And provide other resources to improve a student's life during high school-an example would be helping a student who lives away from his/her parents. And helping a student who is living with parents but with another family, due to financial hardship.
11. Provide TUSD stats information in order for parents to access test scores, grades and more.

Advice for high school students
1. Get involved at school. There are clubs, sports and activities to help you meet people and develop your talents!
2. ASK for help if and when you need it. That's a smart thing to do. No one learns alone. Everyone needs help from time to time. Successful people know this.
3. Attend tutoring! We have conference time from 8:00-8:40 where teachers will help you catch up. Or, ask teachers to help you at lunch or after school.
4. Get some exercise, fresh air and sunshine. Everyone needs this.
5. Get enough sleep. IF you can't get up or you are always late to your first class, you need to rest more. Teens need 9-11 hours of sleep each night.
6. Eat fruits, veggies, protein and less sugar and bread. American diets are not always healthy. Hot cheetos is not considered a healthy lunch!
7. Get organized. If you are not sure if a snake could be living in your back pack, it's time to clean it out, organize your materials and group everything together. A folder or area for each class is ideal. Have a pen, pencil, notebook paper, planner and other required materials in a back pack. Ask your teacher or counselor for help if you need to get organized.
8. Make time to READ and STUDY each day. You may think there is no home work, but there is always something to read or review. Ten or twenty minutes a day can produce some GREAT results academically.
9. CHALLENGE yourself to learn a new instrument, take that honors class, improve your swim time, etc. Each person is born with many abilities; these must be nurtured and developed. YOU have a lot to offer and one day someone will depend on YOU. Work hard to reach your potential. You'll be amazed just how much talent and ability you have!
10. What advice would you give to a high school student? To be safe? To avoid drugs? Let me know and we will publish your ideas here. :)
